How to Start a Magazine
Filed Under Entrepreneurship | Comments Off
Dreams of becoming a magazine mogul and schmoozing with the other big wigs in the publishing and entertainment world have motivated many people to start their own magazine. Writers looking for an outlet for their work, or a person with a unique hobby or interest may take this option. Often, someone spots a niche that is not covered in their geographic area and decides to address it by starting a magazine of their own.
Unfortunately, for too many, this dream quickly turns into a financial nightmare. The magazine production costs quickly outpace the advertising and subscription revenue. Writing enough quality content to fill a magazine becomes an arduous task. Couple this with securing revenue to cover the costs of production and advertising to potential subscribers, and it become an overwhelming endeavor. So, how does one go about starting a magazine and making it work?
First, it is important to research the potential topic and see what the competition is for that particular market. A local sports magazine might work in an area where there is good support and a solid following for the local sports programs, if there is not already a magazine covering that topic. Trying to bring another national sports magazine to the market would be difficult with such favorites as Sports Illustrated, Sport, ESPN Magazine and others already occupying prominent spaces. This does not mean that a new magazine with a unique slant on the market wouldn’t succeed. Begin by researching what is already available and present a new idea or a new angle on an established idea.
Next, it is important to decide at what level (local, regional, or national) you are planning to approach the market from. If a local magazine is the goal, one person may be able to handle all the tasks. Trying to handle the production, advertising, sales, and writing is too much for anyone to handle when focusing on a regional or national scale. A larger magazine will require help from others to handle all of these tasks.
Another part of this planning process must include a decision on the delivery format. A magazine may be delivered in traditional, print format or in electronic media format. The electronic format is a much less expensive format, after initial setup. The cost of the domain name and web hosting will be the major expense when setting up an e-zine. The print option will entail more cost on each issue. The cost of the paper, printing, mailing, delivering, and storing the magazines must be taken into account. The frequency of issues will increase or decrease these costs. This is why some magazine publishers opt for a quarterly production schedule.
Determining the cost of production and the potential market will help you set advertising rates. This will also set the amount of space needed for advertising, and conversely the amount of space available for articles and other content. When setting advertising rates, factors such as the number of ads in the magazine, the estimated readership, and target businesses must be taken into account.
Pre-advertising and marketing the magazine title will help to build hype and start generating advertising revenue. Putting together a sample layout for use when approaching potential advertisers will help them see what you are proposing. Using the internet can help to build advance interest, as well. Press releases and free, or cheap, advertising will also help.
Filling the magazine with quality articles and other content is essential to the success of the magazine. This content may be produced by you or by other writers, depending on size of the magazine and the market. If you produce the articles, provide the pictures and do the advertising layout you will save a lot on production. If you need to buy articles, pictures, or pay for layout or formatting, the production costs will be higher. Sometimes it is possible to get writers who will work for exposure and a byline without pay, especially if there is the potential for pay later.
Finally, the magazine must be laid out and set up for production. It is important to find a quality printer for the magazine, if you go with the print option. For the first issue, it will be important to estimate the number of magazines needed. For subsequent issues, the subscription numbers and previous sales numbers will help determine print needs. It is always important to print more than the number purchased the previous issue. If an electronic format is chosen, the layout must be attractive and easy to navigate. Once the magazine is laid out and printed, or loaded up to the website, it must be delivered and promoted. A magazine is only as successful as its circulation numbers. Advertisers want to see a good return for their investment. They want to know that their advertisement is reaching as any people as possible. Ultimately, the success of the magazine relies on the number of people who read it.

Royal Basketball With Sacramento Kings Tickets
Filed Under Art And Entertainment | Comments Off
Sacramento Kings tickets are in many ways, the royal cut when it comes to basketball action. The career of the Kings has certainly had its ups and downs and they have seen a lot of action, both on and off the court. Today, the Kings have come back to their original fighting action with a bang.
The Sacramento Kings are based in Sacramento, California and are a part of the National Basketball Association’s pacific division and western conference. They play their home games from the ARCO Arena and have one championship win, one conference title and five division title wins to their name.
A Royal Start
The beginning of the Kings goes way back to 1945, when the team joined the National Basketball League as the Rochester Royals. The Royals tasted success almost immediately and won NBL championship victories two years in a row in 1946 and 1947. In 1948, the team was shifted to the BBA, which in turn merged with the NBA just a year later. The Royals still managed to keep their winning streak into the NBA, clinching yet another championship win in 1951.
In 1957, the Royals were moved to Cincinnati and even though they played well in the court, they started losing money. Even though talks about relocation and financial crisis began, the team stayed until 1972, after which it shifted to Kansas City. While the team played well, it seemed to be dogged with bad luck and some truly bizarre scandals. A winter storm caused the roof of their stadium to collapse and then the team’s general manager was found guilty of reusing old postage stamps. In 1985, the team was moved to Sacramento.
City Of Kings
Hopes were high that Sacramento Kings tickets would sell well in their new home. But the team got off to a bad start, marred by poor management and a series of tragic incidents like career-ending injuries and suicides. Even though sales of Sacramento Kings tickets did reasonably well, the team only made the playoffs once in the next ten years. By the early nineties, the Kings became known as the team that had a strong fan support and high selling Sacramento Kings tickets but little else.
Things really changed for the Kings when the team ownership changed hands. From 1997 onwards, the team began to make a mark on the courts, especially with their control of the ball known as Princeton Offense. The team began to be known for its particularly stylish way of playing, which did a lot to boost the sales of Sacramento Kings tickets. By 2000, the Kings were able to prove that they were a winning combination of style and substance. The offensive line up continued to improve, prompting Sports Illustrated to call it the Greatest Show on Court. In 2002 and 2003, the team managed to win two divisional titles. Today, the team seems poised to go farther than a divisional win and try for the championships. You can be there to watch all the action live and you don’t even have to wait in line. Just get in touch with an online authorized ticket vendor and book your Sacramento Kings tickets.

In Sports Illustrated’s article on Materazzi, they open it up with this line: Nothing falls down more easily than an Italian soccer player…
Wow, I guess american sports writers do know a little something about football!:)
Pinky: Americans don’t fall, they foul!!
RO35: SI, March 19th, 2007, pg.100. You can look it up, it’s there.

Magazine Reviews: Sports Illustrated
Filed Under Journalism | Comments Off
With over 55 years experience in professional sports, Sports Illustrated (SI) is a weekly magazine that has been a mainstream success featuring colourful photos, insightful reporting and inserts of sports cards. Originally published in 1954, Sports Illustrated illustrates the power of professional sports covering thoroughly the NFL, Baseball, NHL, NBA, College Football, College Basketball, NASCAR, Golf, Boxing, Horse Racing, Soccer, and Tennis.
Achieving a circulation of 28 million copies per year, Sports Illustrated covers not only the conventional sports one would expect to see in its pages, but also the more unusual sports such as falconry or rock climbing. From it start, Sports Illustrated featured several innovations that gave the magazine prestige and made it a must-have for any true sports fan. Introducing the liberal use of color photos, SI featured colourful, action pages that make its readers feel like they are actually there when the event is taking place. Featuring also the scouting reports with the inclusion of World Series Preview and New Year’s Day bowl game round-up, SI increased the watching of games on TV. Also, Tex Maule, Robert Creamer and Dan Jenkins joined SI as regular columnists, while the magazine featured High school football Player of the Month awards. SI also features standard segments in each issue referred to as Departments. “Faces in the crowd” honours the accomplishments of talented amateur athletes, while “The Point after” covers anything in the world of sports as a back-page column.
Sports Illustrated makes everything possible. With its well-written articles keeps the interest high, while with frequent statistics, the latest scores and breaking stories, plus interviews and profiles of hot-shot athletes it remains the one-stop source for inclusive sports coverage.
Personally, apart from its excellent photography, I highly credit Sports Illustrated for its articles. Featuring great columnists and storytellers, the magazine uses academic vocabulary and features human interest stories that have often provided me with background information in history, geography, and science. For example, the story of John Akii-Bua, apart from the athlete’s bio has also given a lot of information about the history of Uganda. Or articles about NBA that make me understand the geography of the United States while following the East and the West Coast Division. Or articles about training that provide physiology tips.
Sports Illustrated remains on the top of the sports aficionados’ picks for a sports magazine. Every week, it gets me in the heart of sports, with stunning action photography and profound coverage. I would even dare to say that Sports Illustrated is brilliantly enlightening. And it’s not too much, even for a sports magazine.

Ufc Fighting for the Next Best Option in Sports Betting
Filed Under Online Gambling | Comments Off
Unless you have lived on a remote island for the last few years or so you may not have noticed the most exciting sport to hit the circuit in a long time. Professional Boxing has killed fans long enough with the slow boring style along with the scams and fight fixing that has altered the sport. Now fight fans have an alternative and it is exciting, fast and modern leaving boxing knocked out so to speak.
So what is it? It is mixed martial arts more popularly known as Ultimate Fighting Championship aka UFC. At first this controversial style of fighting was shunned in many states and banned outright banned in others. The thought of two fighters beating each other bare-fisted was considered too barbaric. In fact UFC has since grown in leaps and bounds and has caught on like wildfire with the 35 and under group. It was officially labeled a sport and featured by Sports illustrated as the next best thing when it comes to sports. It has buried boxing in pay per view sales and legends of the octagon such as Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell have become household names.
With the surge in popularity it was only a matter of time before fight fans would be clamoring to bet on their favorite fighters. However you might be pressed to find an offshore sportsbook that has a solid reputation offering odds on upcoming matches. There are some that offer events and fights, but only two sports books that have knocked out the others when placing lines on the UFC.
Bookmaker is the house of the Sports Betting action! Bookmaker is quick to release lines and will cover all of the fights listed on the fight card. They not only cover pay-per-view fights like UFC 76 and but alsoUFC fight nights and they even cover the lesser known fights like bare knuckle mixed martial arts, rio’s heroes and more. Proving again why they are one of the best.
Another great option when it comes to UFC betting sports bettors will love betED. They offer sports betting odds on all MMA events on the UFC, Pride FC and much more. betED Sportsbook, Casino & Poker, offering players an exciting and unrivalled wagering experience.
It is great to see online sportsbooks keeping up with the changing of the world of sports and modernizing with the rest of the world. When it comes to being able to bet on UFC events and mixed martial arts these two books don’t give the other sportsbooks a fighter’s chance!
