Dana White Vs the Maloofs

Christy Pinheiro, EA asked:

Okay, so I was just thinking about the two hippest, biggest names in sports & entertainment– the Maloofs and Dana White. I know it’s not really a fair contest, because technically, Joe and Gavin are two separate people, but just bear with me.

There are very few powerhouses like them in sports these days– Sports have gotten so money-hungry and corporate. I **** it! The Maloofs are actual human beings, and Dana White is a really visible figure in the UFC. (I know, I know, Al Davis is a real human being, too, but barely!!!)

They are young, vibrant, and real leaders. Ultimate fighting used to be a joke– now it’s a real sport with broad appeal. It’s like the reverse of what happened in boxing. I used to watch boxing (not a huge fan, but I watched all the big bouts), and then when I saw the Holyfield-Tyson II fight, (also known in some circles as “The Bite Fight” or “Bite of the Century”), it was all over for me. Boxing had officially become a joke.

The UFC was full of dirty politics, too. And Dana White cleaned it up. He has his critics, I know, but I still think he’s a major pimp. He didn’t create the sport, but he was the UFC’s Dr. Frankenstein– he gave it life!!

Still, not everyone’s a cheerleader– Gary Shaw, the EliteXC Live Events President recently lashed out at Dana White with this explosive quote:

Dana thinks that he invented the sport of MMA. He is very lucky that he had rich friends in the Fertitta’s to fund the sport, the Fertitta’s are great I would never say otherwise about them. And even more lucky that SPIKETV bailed him out of a $35 million deficit. It’s no wonder that fighters, like Tito Ortiz and others are fed up with him. Dana doesn’t care about the fighters and treating them well. - Gary Shaw, MMA Mania, Mar-2008

Dana has also spoken about Shaw with some equally choice words:

Gary Shaw is a  *****  loser,” White said. “We beat our pay-per-view numbers from last year. Do you hear that? We beat our pay-per-view numbers from last year. We just don’t brag about it because we don’t talk about our business in the public. -Dana White , Sports Illustrated (SI.Com). 2007

Anyway, I think that Dana is really great for the sport because he has a worldwide, all-inclusive vision– he’s a true CEO with profitability in mind, and that’s what you really need in order to make a sport successful.

Honestly– how many people follow the sport of Greco-Roman wrestling?

Really? Yeah, me neither.

But I’ll bet you if Dana White started promoting it, it would be the new football.

Now, in the case of the Maloofs, they are more sports “investors” — they have their hands in a lot of honeypots, and they are both geniuses (and genuinely nice guys, too). Joe and Gavin Maloof have recently started the richest skateboarding competition in skateboard history known as the Maloof Money Cup, with cash prizes totaling up to $500,000. They have their hands on America’s pulse, and they know what people want to see. Here’s a quote from one of the attendees:

I’ll say this, I love the Lakers, and it’s hard to keep me from the Golden Nugget when I’m in Vegas, but I can clearly see why the Maloof family finds success…They do things first class, they bring in great people and there’s a genuine “RESPECT” for all of us who are fans… THANK YOU. It’s really true– the Maloofs are as nice as everybody says. And they are trying to create an environment (the Palms) where young adults can go and have some adult fun. The Palms is fucking spectacular, by the way. Last time I went to Vegas I spent the whole time at the Palms.

All the other hotels on the strip ****. The Belaggio is so tired and it has a creepy “Neverland Ranch” vibe. The MGM looks like an Indian Casino, which is cool, I like Indian Casinos (I go to the Jackson Rancheria in California), but please… don’t kid yourselves…

Some of the other hotels are just ridiculous, like the Ceasar’s Palace or Circus Circus. Las Vegas is not a “family-friendly” destination, and trying to make it seem like one just seems like a big joke.

That being said, the Palms hotel was fabulous, and even the food at the downstairs diner was good, which I thought was amazing. The rooms were great, and I love the Kings… oh, decisions, decisions!

Okay, so I vote that the Maloofs are bigger PIMPS, but I still love you, Dana!
